Then you spend six minutes explaining a drill while the kids start throwing pinnies at each other. By the time you get to actual activity, half the practice is gone — and you haven't coached anything.

Part 1: Warm-Up / Arrival Activity (10 Minutes)
The moment kids arrive, they need something to do. Don't make them wait. Don't make them line up. Don't make them listen to instructions before they've burned off any energy.
Set up a self-directed activity that's already running when they walk onto the field. It should be low-stakes, fun, and require minimal coaching — because for the first ten minutes, you're going to be greeting latecomers, talking to parents, and hunting for a missing pinnie no matter what.
Good options: a simple dribbling game, a low-intensity tag variant with a ball, or free play with a loose challenge ("see how many times you can juggle before practice starts"). The goal is warmup and engagement — not instruction. Let them move, let them arrive mentally, and let the session start on its own terms.
The key: kids who arrive early shouldn't be standing around bored. Bored kids find something to do. It's never good.
Part 2: Skill Work (20 Minutes)
This is where the real coaching happens — and the single most important rule is: pick one skill, maybe two. Not three. Not "let's work on defending, passing, shooting, and communication today." One skill.
Young athletes learn through short, focused repetitions — not long explanations. The attention window for a 7-year-old is roughly 30 seconds before they've mentally moved on. Even a 10 or 11-year-old starts tuning out after a couple of minutes standing still. Keep explanations to 60 seconds max, demonstrate it, and get them moving.
Structure your skill work in 5-minute chunks. Introduce the skill, run a short drill, give brief feedback, modify slightly, repeat. Rotate stations or partners often. The variety keeps energy up and the repetitions keep skill-building on track.
Tip for coaching youth athletes: use names constantly. "Nice footwork, Marcus" lands ten times harder than generic praise. Kids at this age need to feel seen — not just managed.
Part 3: Scrimmage / Competition (20 Minutes)
This is the part they remember. This is why they came.
Small-sided games — 3v3, 4v4, maybe 5v5 depending on your roster — put the skill they just worked on into a real context. The ball moves faster, decisions happen quicker, and the learning actually sticks because now there's a consequence attached to it.
Don't cut this section to add more drills. It's the instinct of a new coach — more structured time must mean more learning, right? Wrong. The scrimmage is where everything integrates. A drill teaches a motion. A game teaches when and why to use it. Both are necessary, and the game is not optional.
Keep the teams small and rotate them every 5–7 minutes if you have enough players. Small-sided formats mean more touches, more decisions, and more fun for every kid — not just the three most skilled players.
Part 4: Cool-Down / Team Circle (5–10 Minutes)
This is the segment most coaches skip when they're running behind. Don't.
Bring everyone in. Get them settled — standing, sitting, whatever works for your group. This is a two-part close:
Acknowledge the players. Give one genuine, specific observation per player if possible. Not "good job" — "I noticed you tracked back on defense today even when you were tired." You don't have to hit every kid every week, but aim for it. Kids remember when a coach noticed something specific about them.
Preview what's coming. A 20-second preview of next week keeps them connected between sessions and gives them something to look forward to: "Next week we're working on finishing — so practice your shot at home if you want to."
The circle closes the loop on the practice. It turns an hour of activity into a learning session. And it takes ten minutes.
Common Mistakes Coaches Make
Too many drills, not enough game time. You've already heard this — the scrimmage is not a luxury. Protect those 20 minutes.
Talking too long. Set a mental timer: 60 seconds to explain, then demonstrate, then play. Kids stop listening after 30 seconds of standing still. Once you lose them, it takes several minutes to get them back. Short, move, repeat.
No transition plan. The 3 minutes between a drill ending and the next activity starting? That's where practice falls apart. Before you end one segment, have the next one set up. Know exactly where kids are going the moment one activity ends. Three unstructured minutes become ten, fast.
Running the same youth sports drills every week. Same drills, same games, same structure — kids disengage quickly. Vary the drills, change the teams, introduce small new challenges. Keep it fresh enough that they're curious what's coming next.

- Have your next transition ready before the current activity ends. Set up cones, pick teams, know exactly where kids are going.
