Setup: One QB, one stationary receiver 5 yards away, and a cone marking each spot. Multiple pairs can run this simultaneously.

How to run it:

  1. Receiver stands at the cone, facing the QB, feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. QB takes one short step back, sets feet, and throws a clean pass at chest height.
  3. Receiver catches with hands — fingers spread, thumbs in for chest-height passes.
  4. Receiver tosses the ball back and stays at the cone.
  5. Run 8–10 reps, then switch QB and receiver roles.
  6. Progress: move the receiver to 8–10 yards once accuracy is consistent.

Coaching tip: Resist the urge to have beginners throw long right away. Accuracy at 5 yards is a real skill. QBs who can consistently hit a stationary target close will build the mechanics they need once receivers start moving.


3. Route Running Basics (Simple 5-Yard Out Route)

Route running means knowing where to go, when to break, and how to cut at full speed. The 5-yard out route is the simplest starting point — two cones, one break, one catch. It's a perfect flag football drill for beginners and tackle players alike because it teaches the footwork every route depends on.

Setup: A cone at the line of scrimmage, one 5 yards straight downfield, and one 5 yards to the outside. Works as a station with players rotating through.

How to run it:

  1. Player starts at the first cone and sprints downfield at full speed.
  2. At the second cone, plant the outside foot hard.
  3. Drive sharply to the outside toward the third cone.
  4. Extend hands to catch an imaginary (or real) ball at the break point.
  5. Run at full speed all the way into the break — no slowing down before the cut.

Youth football players drop passes for one reason above all others: they watch the ball into their body instead of catching it with their hands. A tennis ball forces hand-eye coordination — you can't trap it against your chest.   1. Players pair up and stand 4–5 yards apart.

Grabbing a flag in space while someone is running and changing direction requires timing, balance, and patience. Setup: All players wear flags. A 10-yard lane with cones at each end. One ball carrier, one flag puller per rep.

How to run it:

  1. Ball carrier walks, then jogs through the 10-yard lane at a controlled pace.
  2. Flag puller shadows from the side and attempts to pull one flag cleanly.
  3. Ball carrier runs straight at first — no spinning or juking.
  4. After a few reps, progress to the ball carrier making small cuts.
  5. Rotate roles so every player practices both pulling and carrying.

Coaching tip: Most beginners reach too early or too late. Coach them to wait until they're even with the ball carrier's hips — that's the pull window. Reaching ahead causes misses; reaching behind means the carrier is already past you.


6. Agility Ladder Footwork

Quick, controlled feet are a football skill at every position. Receivers need it for route breaks. Defensive backs need it to mirror receivers. QBs need it in the pocket. The agility ladder makes footwork a concrete drill — and kids love the challenge of it, which means you'll get real effort every rep.

Setup: One agility ladder laid flat on the ground. If you don't have one, use chalk or tape to mark boxes.

How to run it:

  1. Start with one-foot-in-each-box: step left foot in, then right foot, move to the next box.
  2. Progress to two-feet-in: both feet in each box before moving forward.
  3. Progress to lateral shuffle: lead foot in, trail foot closes, move to the next box.
  4. Add high-knees sprint: drive the knees up through each box as fast as possible.
  5. Run each pattern 2–3 times per player.
